If Sagada, Mt. Province, Philippines is where lovelorn folks go to find themselves, I go to La Union to lose myself and then some.
Situated 6 hours away from Manila by bus, La Union is the perfect place to get away for the weekend. Let your hair down, beach bum, read a book, cozy up on a beach mat, get a tan, watch surfers rip, surf, eat good food, sunset watch, meet lots of people and party at night.
So when my friend over at Hey, it’s Chel told me she wanted to learn how to surf, I instantly knew where to take her and who better teach her how to surf than the amazing local surfers of Elyu Classic Surf School!
Why Learn with Elyu Classic Surf School in La Union?
1.They put the ‘cool’ in sc(h)ool.
They are the best ambassadors of good vibes and they’ll show you the way of aloha at the beach. They’ll share amazing stories while you listen to beach music and watch the sun gorgeously disappear from the horizon… maybe with a bottle of beer or so…
2. They aim to get you STOKED.
They will teach you everything you need to know about surfing and will not let an 1 hour or half day lesson go to waste no matter how hard-headed you may be or if your sense of balance is inexistent. They’ll push you to learn and stand on that board.
3. They offer to take you to other surf spots
It sometimes gets really crowded in Urbiztondo during the weekend so the Elyu Classic surf instructors also offer to arrange surf lessons in other surf spots located in La Union (yesssss, other surf spots, sometimes empty line ups!).
For more info about their rates, feel free to get in touch with them on Facebook or contact Ian Saguan +639178289176
4. They take you under their wing and offer you more things to do other than surfing
They can be your guide on a day trek to the falls, accompany you on a trip to San Fernando night market or give suggestions on the best yet cheap places to eat! They’re amazing like that.
Surf Lesson Rates:
– P 400 surf lessons with surf instructor/hour
– P 200 board rental/hour
Disclaimer: I’m in no way undermining other surf schools in La Union. I just want to highlight how cool Elyu Classic Surf School is <3 #goodvibes
The warm-butter-sliding-down-hot-toast feeling I get when I’m in La Union is nothing if not shared that’s why I always go back bringing different groups of people with me and I get stoked thinking it made them happy to be there.
And just like old times, I couldn’t wait to share the stoke with my friend so we immediately scheduled her surf lessons for the day.
Here are some photos we have documented during the trip:
I have been going back to La Union for what seems to be eons ago when there were only 5 inns/hotels and so little options on where to eat, except for the time I was living in Dubai from 2011-2015.
When I came back last April 2015, La Union had already morphed into a bustlin’ surf town. At first, I thought it would bug me… As much as my system wanted to reject the unfamiliar, La Union’s charm from 5 years back still shines through the cracks and destroys the cynic in me.
Here’s a little video I made from our trip to San Juan, La Union, Philippines:
