Nightlife is a must for me. Wherever I am, I make it a point to wind down (or on some nights wind up) with a beer or a cocktail in hand. So I thought of sharing a list of places I frequent in Poblacion, Makati – a place now rapidly shaping up to becoming a gentrified neighbourhood (not sure what to feel about it, but here we are) bustling with hip and snazzy hole-in-the-wall concept restaurant/ bars.
Here are my top 10 on where to get drinks and chill out all-week long in the backstreets of Makati!
1. Señor Pollo
5767 Ebro St., P. Burgos, Poblacion, Makati
M-Th, Su: 11:30 AM- 12 MN; F-Sa: 11:30 AM- 2AM
This Latin American restaurant probably serves the best chicken in town. Yeah, I said it. Their grilled chicken is highly recommended but if you ask me, I’d rather get me some of that fried chicken with two sides for only P170 pesos. It’s so good, everybody I brought to this joint went nuts over how good the chicken was for its price.
They have amazing affordable food and drinks while serving a really chill Latin vibe perfect if you want to just sit down and catch up with friends after work.
Don Pedro Street cor Jacobo Street, right next to Z Hostel, Poblacion, Makati
Mon-Sat: 6PM-2:30 AM
I hangout at Pura Vida so much, they might as well make me the manager (I kid!). It’s the first Costa Rican bar in Manila that serves authentic Costa Rican food and gets oh-so-groovy around 10pm with reggae music. Great place to hang back and meet loads of people. They serve great cocktails too and inexpensive local beer and gets really packed on Fridays and Saturdays.
3. The Apartment
Don Pedro Street, Poblacion, Makati City
5th floor of Manille Pub
I cannot, for the life of me, find a good photo of The Apartment anywhere! I don’t know if they’re trying to achieve super secret bar status, but here I am anyway, raving about this incredible bar-slash-apartment concept. It’s just too exciting to be left out of this list.
Take 5 flights of stairs from Manille Pub, until you reach the red coloured doors. There are two. Best part is, whichever door you choose, you’ll be sure to have a ball. Best time to go is at 12mn onwards. They also have a quaint roof deck if you need fresh air.
5666 Don Pedro Street, Poblacion, Makati City
T-Th: 4PM-1AM; F-Sa: 5PM-2AM; Su: 4PM-1AM
5779 Felipe Street, Poblacion, Makati City
Mon-Sun 5PM to 12 MN
Al fresco style drinking, Tambai is that unassuming favourite go-to for people who go on low-key dates, want to catch up over mid-week drinks or if you just want to sit and drink and not be bothered by loud music. Tambai hasn’t been around for as long as its neighbouring joints but it has already expanded to a second-storey and is currently expanding a bit more. It’s probably cause their japanese/filipino street food is too good or that you can literally show up in flip flops, ripped short, shirts with holes in ’em and nobody will shade you for it.
Roofdeck, I’M Hotel, 7862 Makati Ave cor Kalayaan Ave, Poblacion, Makati
M: 12MN-2AM; T: 5PM-11:59PM; W-Th, Su: 12MN-3AM, 5PM-11:59PM; F-Sa: 12MN-3AM, 6PM-11:59PM
Adorned with plush interiors and neon lights on the right places, Antidote also claims to be the first jellyfish bar in the country. But that’s really not why it belongs to this list. This new concept bar is all shiny and new and offers you a kick ass view of Manila! They also have great food and cocktails to boot. Great spot to chill and have a night out with your girls.
4992 P. Guanzon St, Poblacion, Makati
M-Sa: 8AM-2AM; Su: 8AM-2PM
Going back to grassroots level with a touch of contemporary hipness, Dulo has found a way to bring back to life the kind of bars that Manila has lost over time. A great place for artists to converge during poetry, acoustic and art exhibition nights. The space transforms from cafe by day to a bar at night. They have great selection of cocktails too! Check out their Instagram page for their events schedule.
5880 Enriquez Street, Poblacion, Makati
Hybrid cafe and bar, don’t let the small space fool you. They serve probably one of the best premium cocktails in Manila. It’s also a great spot for great kind of music, mainly because people who come here have good taste in everything. Sample their highly curated bites and booze and you won’t be disappointed. Best time to go is any time!

If you feel like stepping up your beer game, head on over to Polilya. Specialising in craft beers on tap and an incredible range of beer-infused cocktails – you read it right- beer in your cocktails, done masterfully by an expert mixologist. This bar offers a feel of just being in someone’s living room to set you up for a chill night… but it can still get pretty crazy over the weekend. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This cozy garden rooftop bar/restaurant is where all the magic in your belly happens. People have raved about their food and cocktails since they opened and they are not to disappoint. They got the perfect vibe for a chill night out with friends especially when you got a hot date! It’s a 10/10 for me!
Whether you’re up for a bar hopping trip or just looking to kick it back with a drink or two with your friends, Poblacion, Makati has a whole range of chill out places you, crowded or not.
